10 states eye Internet gambling bills- Really??

10 states eye Internet gambling bills | Daily Chronicle

According to a recent report being propagated by the pro-online gambling forces (Caesars, MGM, AGA, etc…) there are 10 states: California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, that are looking at passing online gambling bills (or expanded bills).

What’s interesting to note is that two of the ten listed include Nevada and NJ, states that have already passed online gambling legislation. Their inclusion on the list is based on the apparent rationale that there is proposed legislation for “expanded” online gambling. If you exclude these two then we are down to eight states.

Hawaii is also on the list. What’s interesting here is that Hawaii is one of two states (Utah the other) that does not permit ANY form of gambling within its borders. Furthermore, the AG of Hawaii just signed on to the letter signed by 16 AG’s against online gambling. It would be a stretch to believe that they would pass any gambling, let alone online gambling legislation in the near future.

So  excluding Hawaii we are now down to seven states.

Looking at the rest of the list, California has apparently been looking at online gambling for a few years now and the chances of the tribes, horsemen and other special interest groups agreeing on anything to do with online gambling is remote. Add to this the recent news that one of the sponsors (Senator Roderick Wright) of  online gambling legislation has recently been convicted of some criminal charges, makes the likelihood of any legislation passing before 2015/2016 highly suspect.

So now we are down to six states.

The other states apparently looking at online gambling legislation have been “exploring” this for a few years now and in my humble opinion there will nothing happening in those states in the foreseeable future. Furthermore aside from Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Illinois, the states apparently looking at legislation are small and inconsequential.

In contrast to this “breaking news”, this week it was reported that now 16 AGs have signed onto a letter to congressional leaders and the House and Senate Judiciary committees asking Congress to keep online gaming illegal

The letter was signed by AGs in Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming, along with Guam.

I suppose that after this news the pro-online gambling spin doctors felt that they should come out with some news to “counter” the AG’s letter but when you scrape the surface this “news” really is no news at all.

As I have said before, IMHO, Adelson will ultimately prevail.

2014 Florida Legislative Session Shying Away from Gambling Expansion

sfl-chan-lowe-florida-gambling-20130919-001The dream of expanded gambling in Florida seems to be on hold for 2014 as: “House Speaker Will Weatherford said that his chamber would not act without legislation coming in concert with a constitutional amendment that would allow voters to weigh in on any possible gambling expansion”.

This does not bode well for the pro-expansion folks. There are so many unresolved issues in the Florida gaming market: racing issues, regulations, dogs, decoupling and more.  Most importantly, the Seminoles have to be reckoned with as they have a lot of clout in Florida (to the tune of 200M a year) and are not about to see their monopoly of table games threatened.

Until all these issues are contended with by the Legislature there will be no changes to the Florida gambling landscape in the foreseeable future.

BREAKING NEWS: Wynn joins Adelson crusade against web gaming | Ralston Reports

wynn/adelson

It looks like the anti-online gambling forces just got a major boost this week as Stephen A. Wynn, Chairman and CEO of Wynn Resorts, has decided to throw his weight behind Sheldon Adelson and his position against the proliferation of online gambling in the US.

Just as I have been saying for quite some time now, it is only a matter of time that the anti online gambling coalition will be victorious in suppressing the  growth of online gambling at the federal and state levels.

With two of the most important players in the global gaming industry now aligned in their position against online gambling in the US, the pro-forces do not stand a chance.

Steve Wynn is a brilliant tactician and he has extensively looked at online gaming for more than 13 years. I know this personally as I was involved years ago in investigating i-gaming for his company in the early 2000’s.

If Steve Wynn has finally decided to join the anti-online gambling front then there must be a very good reason he has done so. Maybe he saw the writing on the wall. Maybe he just wasn’t convinced it was a good thing. At the end of the day, his support will go a long way to help defeat the pro-online gambling forces.

As I have said before Adelson (and now Wynn) will prevail…

Another Self Serving Poll: Interest In Internet Gambling Is Increasing in New Jersey

Poll: Interest in Internet gambling is increasing in New Jersey - pressofAtlanticCity.com: Breaking NewsA poll was released today regarding internet gambling in New Jersey that is almost laughable.

The poll, conducted by the Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality and Tourism at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey surveyed 690 individuals who gambled in Atlantic City in the past year.

It goes on to say that while less than 3% of NJ gamblers have gambled online since the program was launched late November 2013, 7% of those polled said they would gamble online.

The joke is that the margin of error is 3.7% and LARGER in sub-categories.

If that’s the case and the percentage of existing players actually is representative of the true percentage of players that will play online, the i-gaming industry in NJ is bound to be a fiscal failure.

I have been saying for quite some time that the numbers will not be impressive. This poll (which was supposedly showing the industry’s potential growth) supports my position.

Two Casino Behemoths Are About to Slug it Out Over Online Gambling

In the battle between good vs evil there can only be one victor. While this is a tad melodramatic, the truth is that Adelson and LVS have taken the moral high-ground in the anti-online gambling debate. According to Adelson,  the proliferation of online gambling in the US will lead to the corruption of youth and a generation of gambling addicts. Regardless of whether you agree with Adelson’s opinion or not, you have to respect the man as he speaks from the heart. There is no logical reason why Adelson would be against online gambling unless he was truly against it from a moral perspective. In fact, Adelson and LVS would most likely have the most to GAIN if they supported the US online gambling initiative.

On the other hand, Caesars, the AGA and other pro-online gambling folks are purely in it for the money. They don’t have any valid moral or logical reasons to support their position aside from the fact that they stand to make a lot of money.

I still am putting my money on Adelson here. Ultimately he will prevail.
